Case Study - toy packaging project

As part of our work with Hasbro, we were asked to develop three SKUs for a Star Wars licensed product line. Our role included package design, artwork, illustration, product instructions, and card design. A key feature on the back of each package was an image showing the game in use. This visual was especially important because the box insert functioned as both the game board and a pop-up background. The challenge was that the product had not yet been manufactured, and no working prototype was available to photograph.

The only physical elements available to us were a prototype of the box base and the figurines for each SKU. We arranged a small photo shoot for these components, carefully matching the perspective of the figurines to the photographed box base so the final composition would feel natural and convincing.

Using the approved background artwork, we then digitally mapped the graphics onto the photographed box base in Photoshop.

We repeated the process with the game board artwork, integrating each element to build a realistic image of the final product.

Next, we added the side graphics from the box base files to complete the structure of the packaging, leaving only the figurines to be incorporated.

Once those were placed, we enhanced the lightsabers with effects to create more energy and visual impact.

The end result was a fully rendered in-use product image that looked complete, dimensional, and ready for market — despite the fact that the product itself did not yet exist in finished form. The full assignment included three separate SKUs, each with its own artwork and its own custom-rendered box base image for the back panel.
